Nigerian National Port Authority cancels container

 The Port Authority said that in order to alleviate the unnecessary difficulties and huge financial nightmare that shippers and business people have suffered over the years, their decisions are extremely necessary.

A statement issued in Monrovia on Sunday, March 24, pointed out that the former ruling government began to impose additional fees as early as 2016, calling it "staying fees"; this is usually equivalent to several thousand dollars for shippers and End users have serious financial problems.

“Demurrage is the fee charged by the shipping agency to the importer if they do not pick up the goods within the permitted exemption date and ship the full container out of the port or terminal.”

NPA management said that the demurrage that the government implemented in 2016 caused huge losses to shippers and caused the transfer of goods and containers to neighboring ports.

The statement said: "Therefore, NPA management is convinced that the cancellation of port demurrage will help improve customer service, ease corporate distress, and stop charging importers for overdue fees."

The NPA also said that the move is part of the Weah government's commitment to eliminate unnecessary barriers to business and promote international trade.

On behalf of the executive management team, NPA Managing Director Bill Twehway expressed his gratitude to the shipping agencies and other stakeholders for their cooperation after a roundtable discussion on the matter and agreed to cancel the demurrage fee at the port.
